Introduction
This document is the National Operation Plan for the National Bovine Tuberculosis Pest Management Strategy. It has been prepared pursuant to Section 85 of the Biosecurity Act 1993, to give effect to the Biosecurity (National Bovine Tuberculosis Pest Management Strategy) Order 1998 and its amendments of 30 September 2004.
This plan provides for measures to control bovine tuberculosis in cattle and deer herds. It has been prepared by the Animal Health Board Inc (AHB) which is the management agency for the NPMS in terms of Section 84 of the Biosecurity Act 1993.
The principal objective of the National Operational Plan is to reduce the bovine tuberculosis annual period prevalance rate to 0.2% infected herds.
Secondary objectives are:
- By 1 July 2004, to prevent established vector-associated infections in herds within TB vector-free areas.
- By 30 June 2006, to ensure the area of New Zealand where the Annual Period Prevalence rate in herds is less than or equal to 0.2% is at least 226,000 square kilometres.
- For the year ending 30 June 2009, within TB vector-risk areas, to achieve a vector-related mean annual breakdown rate of less than 12 per 1000 herds.
